This is a stunning Victorian-Era edition of Edgar A. Poe's monumental work, The Raven. For an age reference, this book was printed 27 years before the First World War 1914. Antique Poe books of the 19th century are becoming much more valuable as time passes, especially printings of the masterpiece "The Raven." This stunning century-plus special edition has been preserved well and is complete, including all original engravings. This is an extraordinary book, and I hope whoever is lucky enough to be its next owner will cherish it for its historically significant work.
"The Raven" is a famous narrative poem by Edgar Allan Poe. The poem tells the story of a grieving narrator whom a talking raven visits. The raven perches on a bust of Pallas (the Greek goddess of wisdom) in the narrator's chamber and repeatedly utters the word "Nevermore" in response to the narrator's questions.
"The Raven" is known for its dark and melancholic atmosphere, vivid imagery, and musical rhythm. It explores themes of grief, loss, and the descent into madness. The repetitive and haunting refrain of "Nevermore" adds to the sense of despair and inevitability conveyed in the poem.
Poe's skillful use of language and meter, combined with his ability to create a sense of psychological tension and suspense, has made "The Raven" a classic of American literature. It has been widely analyzed, interpreted, and referenced in popular culture.
The poem's popularity has led to numerous adaptations, including theatrical performances, musical compositions, and visual artwork. It continues to resonate with readers and remains one of the most recognizable and studied works in the genre of dark romanticism.
The overall condition of this book is good despite being well over 130 years old. It does have some of the typical aging attributes associated with a book printed in the 1800s, including age, wear, and handling use to the covers and spine, including minor scratches, blemishes, and rubbing. The interior pages are very well-kept, and all of the original works of art are included and complete. Overall, it's a lovely book.
Synopsis
Poe's classic poem of a man visited by a dark omen, first published in 1845. "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore-- While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. "'Tis some visiter," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door-- Only this and nothing more."
