Faber, 1988. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine in fine dustjacket. Signed by the author. Very nice copy of the first Aurelio Zen crime novel, set in Perugia, where the head of a powerful local family has been kidnapped.
Synopsis
Police Commissioner Aurelio Zen has crossed swords with the establishment before - and lost. But from the depths of a mundane desk job in Rome he is unexpectedly transferred to Perugia to take over an explosive kidnapping case involving one of Italy's most powerful families.

This book was complicated but fun, a sort of Borgia family saga, but I had a problem in the beginning trying to keep Italian names straight, like the spaghetti aisle at the grocery store, so I made a list of all parties! The Aurelio Zen series has been produced for PBS and Ratking and one other book in the series were liberally cribbed and totally plot changed. Once I got over the idea that the TV production bore little resemblance to the book, I enjoyed it for what it was. I hear Michael Dibdin is not loved in Italy his sometimes scathing portrayals of Italian political and police life, and justly so. But that isn't his fault!
