We can find it on the work of Old-Noritake shining as metallic iridescent colors. Do you remember the olden days in some homes, there were tea cups having rainbow colors like that of the seashell? That is luster. How is luster different from normal color? Luster is liquid in a bottle whereas normal color is usually powder. The big difference between luster and normal color is the color before firing. Luster has a brown-like color before firing whereas normal color has almost the same color before and after firing. I think that even the painter doing porcelain painting for a long time don't take laster seriously. I wonder why? I always hear "Luster glitters and is vulgar" or "It seems hard to use And when luster is applied after firing normal color, there is a fear of making a mistake when luster is fired. It seems that many painters give up even before having tried. The manner of using luster is not so difficult particularly if you open your mind and try to use it with a sense of fun. Luster becomes a wonderful work, and even combinations with luster will give interesting results as you have never seen before. However, there is an important thing needed to enjoy working with luster. It is the mental attitude of accepting anything that comes out. (I am slightly exaggerating.) Luster delicately differs in color by the thickness of application, the firing temperature and the kind of porcelain used. Most painters think luster cannot be mixed, however it is not true. Luster mixes delicately and changes showing unexpected color development. In addition, color comes off after firing if you apply luster too thickly, but please do not let this failure bother you. That mistake could be one kind of scenery, isn't it? When you open the kiln, enjoy the impressive moment. In note, thanks to the large volume of requests from enthusiastic painters around the world, I decided to attach English translations. Please understand that it is not literally translation but a summary of the Japanese version.
