About This Item

Tchaikovsky P.I. The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. For a four-voice mixed choir. The sheet music. Moscow, P. Jurgenson. 1896, 63 p. , 19x26 cm.

"The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom" was written by P.I. Tchaikovsky in 1878. By this time, the composer had already created the "Fourth Symphony" and the opera "Eugene Onegin" and, apparently, he wanted to try his hand at a new kind of creativity for him. Tchaikovsky perceived the church singing genres as "a huge and barely touched field of activity" and became the first Russian composer to combine church chants into a single musical cycle. The "Liturgy" was written precisely as part of the church service. However, it did not receive support from the clergy. After the premiere, which took place on December 18, 1880 in the hall of the Moscow Noble Assembly, the performance of the "Liturgy" in churches was prohibited. The prohibition was lifted by itself only with the death of Tchaikovsky. In total, two editions of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy were published, in 1878 (the first) and 1896 (the second). Both editions are very rarely found on sale.
