About This Item

Film advertisements for the 1971 queer film Pink Narcissus directed by James Bidgood with Don Brooks and Bobby Kendall. Distributed by Stance Company & PARCO Co., Ltd. This scarce set includes two original 1993 and 1996 Japanese B5 chirashi measuring 7" x 10", and 5" x 7". Pink Narcissus is an American experimental art house drama between two gay men that came out in 1971 where queer topics were just being uncovered in Hollywood. Because of it's vibrant artful direction, it was long rumoured to have been directed by Andy Warhol before discovering the filmmaker as James Bigood. Bigood's photographic and cinematic work was so celebrated for it's artful taste that the art book publication, Taschen, released a book with his full body of work in 1999. These two advertisements were meant as "chirashi" which is Japanese for "flyer" and were handed out as advertisements in movie theaters. Illustrated on both sides, the front of the larger piece shows original vibrant illustrations for the Japanese screening as well as screen grabs on the back with more information. The second flyer shows a black and white screen grab from the movie of both main actors with pink graphic text on the front while advertisements and screenings for other films are shown en verso. Both in overall very good condition.
