About This Item

Oxford University Press, 1980 8vo (24.5 cm), color front., XVI, 160 pp, 6 plates in color. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the front free leaf. From the blurb: "When Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" was published in 1714 its six full-page engraved plates showed that illustrations can elucidate, modify, and supplement text. During later periods, as taste and sensibility changed, the poem's illustrations reflected contemporary attitudes towards Pope's masterpiece. It was often illustrated in th 18th century, by among others Walker, Wale, Stothard, Burney, Hamolton, and above all by Fuseli, who also inspired three of his pupils to emulation. C. r. Leslie used the poem as the subject of a large, brilliant painting. Finally, in 1896, Aubrey Beardsley 'embroidered' a set of nine drawings for an edition of the poem that is the most famous of all. Robert Halsband's book, the first devoted to the subject, deals with all known illustrations, including drawings, watercolors, and oil."
