About This Item

The South Brisbane City Council [circa. 1914]. Book. Poor. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing) - this copy inscribed by an unknown hand on a slip of paper pasted to a preliminary leaf: "To his more than affectionate cousin 'Harry' - admirer, friend, adviser - this is sent as some slight acknowledgement of the hospitality and kindness always extended to his artist cousin, 'Dick'" [the recipient's details - Mr. H.Y.Randall, Longparish, Hants - are gilt-stamped to the base of the upper wrapper]. 8vo. 89pp. Full leather lettered and bordered in gilt at upper board. Silk endpapers (the front free example missing). Illustrated with a photograph of the artist, several internal and external photographs of the gallery and nineteen monochrome reproductions of Randall's works. Lower gutter splitting, and spine ends and corner tips rubbed and chipped. Binding reinforced with cloth tape and tender in places with half a dozen early leaves detached and lain-in. Some spotting to preliminary leaves. A somewhat handled and tender example of an uncommon catalogue of over 600 items, preceded by a twelve-page appreciation, 'R.J.Randall. The Australian Painter-Poet', by 'C.M.J.'. Randall died suddenly in 1906 at the age of 37. Three years later the South Brisbane City Council accepted a little over six hundred of Randall's works in perpetual trust, housing them on the upper floor of the South Brisbane Library, thereafter the Randall Art Gallery, and produced this catalogue of their holdings..
