London, Hatchard, 1844. . First edition, 2 vols, royal 8vo, xii, 478, 2(ads); viii, 459pp., 2 chromo-lithograph frontispieces and 30 chromo-lithograph plates, original red cloth gilt, covers and spines with gilt pictorial designs and gilt borders, a fine set.
Sleeman (1788-1856), an officer in the East India Company, achieved some renown for his part in the anti-Thugee campaign in the 1830's and 40's, before becoming a political resident in Gwalior, and later, Lucknow.
The present work is arranged in the form of a tour and includes observations on Hindu social and religious rituals, crops, legends, witchcraft, etc. A very attractive work with good illustrations of Indian architecture.
