Emerson, Ralph Waldo. American transcendentalist, poet, essayist, writer, philosopher, and abolitionist. Autograph letter signed and written by Ralph Waldo Emerson on September 10, 1873 in Gosnold, Massachusetts. 2 pages on 1 bifold sheet. 6 x 4 in. A frequently visited location to Emerson, he writes to a woman named Sylvia Watson on the largest of the Elizabeth Islands in southeastern Massachusetts, Naushon Island. This letter is exceptionally cordial and pleasant, as Miss. Watson is about to join Emerson's extended family. As a result, he mailed this letter just a few days shy of Sylvia Watson and his architect cousin, William Ralph Emerson's, wedding that took place on September 15, 1873. Emerson opens the letter warmly, writing "My Dear Miss Sylvia,". He continues his kind sentiments by writing, "Your three friends in our house, Mrs. E. and myself, & Ellen, desired to send a token to you on the auspicious Monday, but could agree on none but this 'Bella Donna,' which we dare hope is a favorite of yours." He closes the letter in an earnest manner, signing "With sincere regard & affection, Your Friend, R. Waldo Emerson". In the postscript below his signature, he writes "Miss Sylvia Watson", and closes with "As I am out of reach of my aunt, [?] that her Dad has directions to send the picture of me to Joy Street". Three horizontal folds. In very good condition.
