A Rage To Live (Signed 1st Printing) by John O'Hara - 1949

New York: Random House, 1949. First American Edition 1st Printing. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. From a recent auction of well known collector and Steinbeck bibliographers-- Adrian & Homer Goldstone----with the auction tag tipped in. A copy that originally belonged to fellow author Donald Ogden Stewart (First Printing 1949)--with Stewart's signature in pencil and address in Santa Monica on the front free endpaper--along with his notes as to date of purchase and date of reading. Stewart was friends with Hemingway and was the model for character Bill Gorton in "The Sun Also Rises". Stewart was successful as a screenwriter--with such works as "The Prisoner of Zenda" "Life With Father", and his Oscar award winning screenplay "The Philadelphia Story" in 1940. The two authors knew each other through Hollywood connections-- this copy is signed by O'Hara--on the front free endpaper. Black cloth boards with gilt and red lettering to the front board and spine--"First Printing" on copyright page as called for. A near-fine copy--the title on the spine is lightly faded--a tiny bit of foxing to the bottom of the front free endpaper. The dustjacket is near-fine with light rubbing to the panels. Provenance through Nick Adams books--with the original paperwork noting the copy belonged to Stewart.
