About This Item

New York: Random House, 1949. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with red and gilt lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 590pp. Very good. Mild jacket edgewear, with tiny chips mainly at spine head/tail; "Royal Book Service" inkstamped on front pastedown. Attractive and tight first edition of this American societal epic set in fictional Fort Penn, Pennsylvania -- and this copy bearing three choice autograph additions. In 1965 a film version of this drama was released, and this copy bears three fine, matching heavy stock 5" X 2½" cards each signed boldly by a film cast member tipped one above the other to the front flyleaf. Top to bottom: SUZANNE PLESHETTE (1937-2008, plays lead Grace Caldwell Tate) signs large in black fineline, dating it 31 January 1982 at upper right; CARMEN MATHEWS (1911-95, plays Grace's mother Emily Caldwell) signs in black fineline, dating it 10 May 1993 at upper right; and BRADFORD DILLMAN (1930-2018, plays Grace's husband Sidney Tate) signs in black fineline, dating it 8 February 1985 at upper right. Quite an unusual copy -- and with all three original signature transmittal envelopes laid in.
