About This Item

Garden City: Doubleday Doran & Co, 1933. First Edition. Near fine in decorated dark blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt text on the spine and a bright gilt eagle on the front board and with map end sheets. A small octavo of 7 1/2 by 5 1/4 inches with a small spot of wear to the cloth at the upper rear corner of the spine and minor bumping to the tips of the boards. In a very good+, unclipped dust jacket with shallow chipping to the upper edge of the spine area and light rubbing to the lower edge of the same, both areas of which have been reinforced with scotch tape on the verso side of the jacket. Inscribed to a J. A. Powers with a long sentence with a date of August 10th, 1936 by the author on the title page. An exceptionally scarce title to come by in first edition in a collectible dust jacket as only 5,000 copies were produced in the first printing. The dust jacket art is by N. C. Wyeth. Rabble In Arms is the sequel of Roberts' Arundel which picks up after Arnold's attack on Quebec and follows the sequence of events as the ragged army retreats down the St. Laawrence River to Lake Champlain. Roberts' was one of the first novelists to give credible exposure to the Battle of Valcor Island which, although a loss for the Americans, slowed the British advance down Lake Champlain to connect with the Hudson enough so that they had to return to Canada for the winter of 1776. This ultimately lead to the victory at Saratoga the following year. A handsome, clean copy of one of Roberts' most significant historical fiction novels.
