About This Item
Garden City: Doubleday Doran & Co, 1933. 1937 reprint. Very good+ in dark blue cloth covered boards with tarnished gilt text on the spine and with a bright gilt decoration on the front board. A small octavo of 7 1/2 by 5 1/8 inches with several short closed tear to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and foxing to the rear end sheets a result of the reaction to the glues used in binding. Without its issued dust jacket. An exceptionally scarce title to come by in first edition as only 5,000 copies were produced in the first printing. 870 pages. The sequel of Roberts' Arundel which picks up after Arnold's attack on Quebec and follows the sequence of events as the ragged army retreats down the St. Laawrence River to Lake Champlain. Roberts' was one of the first novelists to give credible exposure to the Battle of Valcor Island which, although a loss for the Americans, slowed the British advance down Lake Champlain to connect with the Hudson enough so that they had to return to Canada for the winter of 1776. This ultimately lead to the victory at Saratoga the following year. A bright fresh copy of one of Roberts' most significant historical fiction novels.
