Denmark 2015. Remember the DANSK stores around the U.S., I wonder if you miss them as much I do ? Finally the designer of most of the contents of these stores had a one man exhibition in Denmark, where he is was not well-known. Jens Quistgaard regarded himself more as a sculptor than a designer, however he did practice industrial design, thereby expanding the traditional role of the artist. This exhibition shows how the design of objects and utensils for daily use in the home was achieved with techniques and form language, which heralded new times within design and industrial mass production, whilst still preserving craftsmanship. Several of Quistgaard’s designs and ideas, which today may seem somewhat simple, were actually revolutionary for their time. A symbiosis of innovative design, honesty with regard to materials, and solid craftsmanship are trademarks for his design, which unites modernism, functionality and personal expression. Unlike cool Scandinavian modernism, he would always add a personal touch to his designs. For many, Jens Quistgaard represents the very essence of Danish Modern whereas in his native Denmark, he has remained an unheralded pioneer, for which, this exhibition has aimed to make amends.
