About This Item

Lyons: Pierre Thened, 1705. Fourth Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. Two volumes. 12mo. Vol. I: [30], 532, [38 pp. index], engraved frontis., folding map, one folding plate. Vol. II: [10], 442, [20 pp. index]. Marbled endpapers. Early polished calf, elaborate gilt-decorated spine, dentelles, red morocco labels. Light wear to spine ends; a corners worn through. Owner inscriptions in old hand on ffep and title. Occasional mild soiling. A handsome set. Fourth edition. Though his dates are uncertain, the rhetorician and historian Quintus Curtius Rufus most likely wrote his Life of Alexander the Great during the reign of Claudius in the middle of the first century C.E.

Modeled on the classic style of Livy, perhaps verging toward parody, this emotional portrayal of Alexander is marked by vivid detail, bold speeches and "reflects the Peripatetic view of a tyrant favored by Fortune" (Oxford Classical Dictionary). Only eight of Curtius's 10 books have been passed down from antiquity, leaving gaps. As a historian, Curtius is not read for accuracy: The author himself cheerfully admits he omits nothing his authorities tell him, preferring to entertain the reader with a lively narrative over critical objectivism.
