About This Item
xlvii+521 pages with frontispiece, illustrations, folding maps and 2 pocket maps and index. Octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria to the cover. Translated into English and Compiled, with Notes and an Introduction, by Bolton Glanvill Corney. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society, Second Series, Number 36. Volume II of the three volume set. First edition.
This volume covers the period of the Aguila's second voyage to Tahiti. The materials composing its history fill the major portion of this volume and deal more particularly with the Spaniard's Occupation of the island, and the extension of their cruise as far as Ra'iatea and Ra'ivavae. Again Beonechea embarked on this second expedition, in command of his old ship the Aguila; and one may presume that the first part of her official journal was composed under his auspices. But Boenechea died just when his labors were at the point of completion; and the command for the homeward voyage evolved on his senior lieutenant Don Tomas Gayangos, whose signature the journal consequently bears.
Condition:
Corners bumped, unread with many pages uncut else a very good copy.
