An historical novel set in fourteenth-century Cyprus when Eleanora of Aragon sails over the sea as bride to Peter I of Cyprus, last of the great kings of chivalry, chance brings Meriel de Gilles, the despised young daughter of a petty noble, into the queen's service, and there she meets and loves Hugh of Mantua, the king's physician and adviser. Eleanora becomes a hated adulteress, and with the king's brother, brings ruin to Cyprus.
