London & Edinburgh: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green and William Blackwell, 1825. First edition. Hardcover. Orig. watered brown silk cloth, lettered paper spine label. Very good. 443 pages. 21.5 x 14 cm. Dedicated to "the daughters of Caledonia." Hogg, born in Selkirkshire had little formal education, worked as a shepherd, fortunately had access to books and began writing verse. He settled in Edinburgh where he began a promising literary career, finding friends in Walter Scott, Byron, Wordsworth, Southey and the publisher John Murrary. Wordsworth's poem "Upon the Death of James Hogg" expressed respect and affection shared by many of his contemporaries.
