About This Item
New York: E.P.Dutton, 1978. First American Edition. 8vo, original white cloth over light orange boards, lettered in copper on the spine and in the dustjacket. 218 pp. A very good copy with a hint of edgewear to the spine tip of the jacket. WRITTEN WITH THE WIT AND STYLE OF A TWENTIETH-CENTURY JANE AUSTEN. Barbara Pym has made a beautifully constructed, almost musically perfect tale. It is the story of the subtle triumph of human dignity over the threats of solitude and death.
Synopsis
Quartet in Autumn is a novel by Barbara Pym, first published in 1977 and shortlisted for the Booker Prize. It was Pym's comeback novel after fifteen years of publishing rejections, following a successful record as a novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s. As a novel, it represents a departure from her earlier excursions into light comedy, being the story of four office workers on the verge of retirement.
