HB. 75 vols (bound in 67), 8vo/roy 8vo, various bindings: Vols 1-8 + NS 1-8 bound in 8 vols, later qtr cloth, marbled boards, leather title pieces to spines, pages trimed with some plate captions shaved; vols 9-21, half leather, teg, rubbed, one vol with boards detached; vol. 22 rebound in buckram; vols 23-62, half leather, marbled end-papers, teg, some rubbed to hinges; 1 vol lacks spine, bds detached, 1 with rear hinge broken, 1 spine damaged; vols 62-67 buckram, gilt rules to spines to match the leather bound vols. A good run of this early journal on microscopy. Vol. 1 (Transactions, 1853, pp. 57-58) includes 'On the Application of Photography to the Representation of Microscopic Objects' by Joseph Delves, which is illustrated by an albumen print of photomicrographs, the first to appear in a British journal, prepared by J. Delves and Samuel Highley and illustrating the spiracle and tracheae of the silkworm and the proboscis of the fly. Vol. 1 (Quarterly Journal, 1853) also includes, 'On the Photographic Delineation of Microscopic Objects by Artificial Illumination', by George Shadbolt (pp. 165-170), and, 'On the Practical Application of Photography to the Illustration of Works on Microscopy, Natural History, Anatomy, &c.', by Samuel Highley (pp.178-194). Highley was the publisher of the journals, and arranged for the albumen print from Delves's negative to be made by Henneman..
