The first part deals with the pre-reformation history of the original abbey from 1132-1536. Founded by Baldwin de Redvers, Earl of Devon, who formed the Benedictine foundation under the Abbot Gervase of Savigny in Normandy. It was a sizeable community and developed the Areton Valley which was not the easiest of landscapes. However they became sizeable enough to send out colonies of monks for foundations at Stanley in Wiltshire in 1154 and later at Buckland in Devonshire in 1278. It prospered until the dissolution when, in July 1536 after an existence of just over 400 years it was disbanded. The second part of the booklet covers the Modern Quarr Commuunity founded in 1908 by brothers of the order under Dom Gueranger from Sable near Le Mans. This order was dissolved by the Law of The Separation of Church and State introduced by the French State in 1906 and it was a consequence of this legislation that so many French orders of teaching brothers and nuns found shelter on the south coast of England, in Jersey and the Isle of Wight. The foundation continues today and it?s offices are still celebrated throughout the day.* This is a NEAR FINE copy with minimal faults & including two post cards.*
