"A motorist following Route 66 as it enters Oklahoma from Kansas encounters a unique landscape. Out of the level prairie terrain rise unexpectedly huge mountains that from a distance remind one of the Ozarks or the Black Hills. Closer investigation reveals that these mountains are nothing more than gigantic piles of chat that have been removed from the depths of the earth, the residue of ores that once contained valuable quantities of lead and zinc. With adjacent mine shafts in ruins ans smelting plants dismantled, the massive hills fill the visitor with a sense of foreboding that is not dispelled until reaching prosperous Miami some elven miles distant. Had the traveler been a bit more curious his impressions of the land would have been different. The route he had followed traversed the domain of the Quapaw Indians, a tribe that in centuries gone-by reigned as the sovereigns of Arkansas and was courted by the kings of Europe......"
