About This Item

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1913]. Signed limited edition, number 505 of 1,000 copies signed by the illustrator. J. M. Barrie's comedy was first performed in 1901 and enjoyed frequent revivals. The play provided the name for the confectionery first manufactured in 1936. The play was first filmed in 1927 and a second adaptation, starring Katharine Hepburn, was released in 1937. Reviewing the volume in December 1913, the Times Literary Supplement noted that "with Hugh Thomson's irresistible illustrations in colour it is a book not merely to like, but to love". The bookplate is that of Christopher Hatton Turner (1873-1940), the architect, author and social reformer. Quarto. Original vellum, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, elaborate blocking to front cover in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With 22 tipped-in colour plates and other illustrations by Hugh Thomson, captioned and illustrated tissue guards. Bookplate to front pastedown. Front cover slightly bowed, binding slightly soiled with mark to front cover and toning to rear cover, lacking ties, some light internal browning; a good copy.
