About This Item

The Bannisdale Press, London, 1950. 1st edition. Hard covers, no dust jacket. V.g./No Jacket. The author was a pioneering geologist, whose anti-war stance placed his career in considerable jeopardy. His achievements in developing accurate methods of correlating coal seams through spore analysis were of huge economic benefit to the mining industry, and foreshadowed modern methods of stratigraphic diagnosis now used routinely in the oil industry. He also devoted much time and energy to adult education. This book also demonstrates his ability as an historian. Almost half the book is devoted to 'Quakers in trade and industry', most of the remainder to 'Science and medicine' with a small final section on their impact in Banking.
