A scarce copy of the true first UK edition of this unparalleled study of Persia's early contact with modern age, followed by a more common, but still scarce US edition of 1988. Professor Lambton outlines Western influence on =the Qajar state and traditional society, and the following process of social change and conflict resulting in the Constitutional Revolution of 1905-6 and the emergence of a modern Iranian nation state.
