About This Item
Lipsiae [Leipzig]: Sumptibus Ottonis Holtze, 1889. Leather. Near Fine. 5.5" by 4". Not Stated. A small attractive volume of the poetical works of Horace; an uncommon edition edited by Karl Hermann Weise and bound in full vellum. A later edition of this work in a full vellum binding with decorative gilt to the spine and marbled end papers. Ink inscription to the first blank page and to the title page. A collection of the best known poetical works of the Roman satirist Horace, in the original Latin, edited by Karl Hermann Weise. 'Odes' is a collection of four books of lyric poems by Horace, originally published in 23 BC and 13 BC. The odes are written in an imitation of the short lyrical poems written by the Greek poets Sappho, Pindar, and Alcaeus. They cover a range of subjects, including religion, wine, patriotism, love, friendship, and morality. This particular version, edited by Karl Hermann Weise, is becoming uncommon. In a full vellum binding. Externally, very smart, with only a couple of small marks to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Near Fine
