About This Item
Stoughton, Massachusetts: Western Hemisphere, Inc, 1970. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Edited by Dale L. Morgan. Eight illustrations, with two maps, including one folding. Stoughton, Massachusetts, 1970. First edition. Gardiner wrote this detailed and rich recollection for the benefit of his children, completing the manuscript in 1896. He left New York City on the steamer Crescent City in March 1849, crossed the Isthmus of Panama, took the brig Sylph to San Francisco, and arrived in late July. During his stay in California, he mined at Hawkins' Bar and Sullivan's Creek between August 1849 and March 1850; the Mariposa mines from April to July 1850; Horse Shoe Bar on the American River from May to September 1851; and Secret Ravine from October to June 1852. Other locations mined by Gardiner from 1852 until his return home in 1857 included Swett's Bar, Indian Bar, Chambers' Bar, and Belvidere Flat. He also wrote in some detail about his visits to San Francisco and Stockton. Red cloth binding, with gilt stamping. A near fine copy. Kurutz, G.: The California Gold Rush, #262.
