About This Item
Superintendent of Documents, US Government Printing Office, 1957-01-01. Paperback. Very Good/in illustrated wraps. Scarce Softcover with related book, 1957 First Edition U.S. Treasury Department/Internal Revenue Service Washington, D. C. 14 pages with illustrations. Very Good, in illustrated wraps. Minor shelf/edge wear and a touch of toning to the edges. Previous owner name is stamped on the front and rear cover. All pages are clean and crisp inside. State of the art pursuit driving instructional for Federal Agents in the late 50's and actually somewhat instructional for its time. Remember, most cars of that era were heavy and powered by large V-8 engines. Absolutely no mention of moonshiners, good ole boys or souped up cars contrary to the lurid sounding editorial review on Amazon that had to have been posted after watching the film Thunder Road ( a cult classic) mentioned below. It WAS however used by federal agents that were training to apprehend the above mentioned lawbreakers, bank robbers and other dangerous outlaws. The driving tips in this government brochure tried to give the feds some instruction in cornering at high speeds and the necessity of special braking maneuvers to make up for the stock nature of government vehicles and to keep the public safe. As far as Moonshiners go, they were providing a popular and sought after product for a thirsty public, that was, in keeping with a regional tradition and source of income that goes all the way back to the underlying reason for Shay's Whiskey Rebellion in the aftermath of the American Revolution. Not to mention that, those good ole boys of that time and place in Appalachia, with their souped up hot rods, were also responsible for the birth of NASCAR. Printed the year before the film Thunder Road, 1958 United Artists, Starring Robert Mitchum and Gene Barry. Highly recommended on several levels, instructional and historical. OCLC#320219542. A very nice copy of a very scarce booklet. Also included is the popular Science issue of August 1962 which has an article on pursuit Driving LOC SSE-01
