Description:
San Francisco: Mattachine Society, 1960. Wraps. Fine. 5-1/4 x 8-1/4" stapled pale blue illustrated wraps printed in dark blue. [32] pages; pp. [15]-[18] are on bright mustard paperstock. Fine, without flaw. First issued in January 1955, the MATTACHINE REVIEW became just the second American magazine published by and for the gay and lesbian community. It intentionally provided a "milder," more conservative alternative to ONE Magazine, founded two years earlier, in the belief that homosexuality would ultimately gain social acceptance through education and bridge-building. The editor, Harold "Hal" Call, who had been arrested on morals charges in 1952, did not appear on the masthead until August, 1956, although he contributed many of the articles in early issues pseudonymously. In this issue, a cover story on homosexuality in fraternal and identical twins. The yellow cardstock pages are a flyer for the ONE Institute of Homophile Studies lecture series taking place from August 12-September 2.
