About This Item

16mo, pp. 480, [1] permission, [1] blank; cropped tight at head with the occasional loss of the top of a page number; occasional pen trials and markings in ink in margins, and first few leaves a little dog-eared, with the odd marginal tear and two small holes in title-page; otherwise largely, aside from occasional spotting, clean and fresh; illegible ownership signature in ink on title-page, dated 1752; in contemporary vellum, somewhat worn, and stitching loose, with faded writing in ink on upper cover (illegible); lacking flyleaves, endpapers with the name 'E. Leman' repeated in ink in a contemporary hand.

Very uncommon Albi printing of Virgil's Eclogues, Georgics, and Aeneid, following the text edited by Theodor Poelmann (1510-1607) originally printed by Plantin in 1558.

The edition was printed by J.B. Baurens, the most prominent of the Albi printers of the eighteenth century, and was likely designed for the use of students, in a format suitable for fitting in a pocket. This copy would certainly support that, with its various pen trials on the paste-downs and endpapers, as well as occasionally in the margins. The permission is dated February 7, 1747, but it may be the case that the sheets were reissued several times; the copies on CCFr each give a different date (although they do not suggests dated title-pages. We can say with reasonable certainty that ours dates from, at the latest, 1752.

Kallendorf, Additions and Corrections to A Bibliography of the Early Printed Editions of Virgil, 1469-1850, LW1737-1792 (this copy); not in OCLC; CCFr records copies at Tarbes, Toulouse, and Albi.
