Small area of discoloration at the bottom of the spine caused by former shelf sticker. Library impress stamp on the title page. "Withdrawn" ticket on inside front cover. Pages are generally clean with a few miniscule marginal tears and a couple of light pencil notations.

A name penciled on front blank leaf – "G.A. Sanderson Feb. 20 1911" – perhaps the same G.A. Sanderson who was a District Attorney in Middlesex County, Ma. around this time. Interior pages are clean. Report of the sensational Boston trial of Leavitt Alley, a local teamster, for the murder of Abijah Ellis a local merchant. Ellis’s dismembered body was found in a barrel floating in the Charles River. The prosecution alleged that the motive for the murder was a financial debt. Two booklets bound together concerning the murder trial of Thomas Selfridge. 1.) Charlestown, 1806; 52pp. 2.) Boston, [1807 according to Shaw-Shoemaker] pp.168, [8] including map in the rear. Bound in period quarter sheep with paper boards – well rubbed; edges worn; small repair to upper hinge of front cover. Library blind stamp on title page and second leaf of the first booklet and on p. 100 of the second. The title page in the second booklet contains two tears on the lower half which have been professionally repaired. Pages are lightly age toned with scattered spots of foxing and soiling. Including large woodcut of British coat of arms opposite the title. Printed in English black letter. Re-backed preserving original calf boards; well rubbed; old burn mark or darkened area on front cover. The re-backing extends part way onto the original boards and blends nicely with the old leather; some spots of careful restoration are present on the board edges. A faded early shelf number is hand printed on the fore-edge. The interior is generally clean with occasional brief marginalia in an early hand. A name - "John Byeith" - is neatly written (in the same hand) near the upper edge of the title page. End sheets are renewed in marbled paper. Carefully sealed tear at the bottom of p. 277.
