About This Item
Los Angeles: Hollywood Independent Citizens Committee of Arts, Science and Professions, 1945. Lightly toned toward edges; folded as for mailing and with some very tiny nicks at folds; "1945" lightly pencilled beneath the printed date. Broadside, single leaf 8-1/2 X 11 inches, printed on two sides. Announcement of a meeting on the topic of "Atomic Power and Foreign Policy" held at Hollywood Legion Stadium four months after the world learned of atomic energy with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Designed to be folded and mailed, the announcement appears on the recto; on the verso, adjacent to where an address would be written, is an ominous drawing of a shadowy figure holding the globe with a bold question mark on it, captioned with a quote from Helen Gahagan Douglas "We can afford to split the atom, but we can't afford to split the big three". Speakers included Dr. Harlow Shapley of the Harvard Observatory; congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas, US Marine colonel Evans F. Carlson, and actor and future Governor and President Ronald Reagan. This was two years before Reagan became president of the Screen Actors Guild, so quite early in his political life. Event also included a public performance of Norman Corwin's radio play "Set your clock at U-235
