Name in pencil on front blank. Bookseller stamp near bottom edge of half-title. First published in 1851. The second edition contains a supplement concerning the correspondence of Joseph de Maistre. Barbey D'Aurevilly (1808-1889) flamboyant French decadent writer with strong Royalist and Catholic sentiments. He was known for writing several mystical-sadomasochistic novels. His "Prophets of the Past" discusses the conservative political philosophies of Joseph de Maistre, Francois-René Chateaubriand, Félicité Robert de Lemennais and others.
