This was an extremely important expedition because it laid the groundwork for the Western Expansion, and gave our government a first hand account of the resources we picked up with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, but was greatly assisted by Sacajawea, their Native American guide and translator. This work was published because of the growing…

From the collection of the pianist and teacher Jacob Lateiner (1928-2010), with a note laid in from the distinguished music antiquarian Albi Rosenthal (1914-2004): "for Jacob - as a souvenir of his first (and frustrating) visit to Otto Haas - Albi, London, 12 May 1967." Wrappers slightly worn and soiled. First Edition. Moldenhauer pp. 714-15. "Alban Berg repeatedly assured the composer of his special admiration for this work. [1] (title), 2-13; 9; 8; 8; 8 pp. Engraved. Early signature to title. Slightly browned throughout; repairs to spine of first violin part with slight paper loss. First Edition. Rare. LvBWV v.1 , p. 173. Hirsch IV, 267. Dorfmüller-Weinhold, p. 211. Hoboken 2, 153. "Between the Op. 18 Quartets and those of Op. 59 lie about six or seven years and the 'Eroica.' A whole world, in Beethoven's terms... The bridge between the two worlds is built of works other than quartets, and the only piece of chamber music for strings belonging to this interim stage is the splendid Quintet in C, Op. 29 (with two violas), which lies nearer to the first than to the second period. This work, which may be in some ways regarded as a crown to Op. 18, is still shamefully neglected. As a whole it has greater breadth and economy of line than even the F major Quartet,…

Worcester: Printed by Isaiah Thomas, Jun. sold by him and by Mathew Carey, Philadelphia; also by the various Booksellers throughout the United States, 1802. First US edition. Two volumes. Modern calf-backed marbled boards. Some browning of text, generally light. Contemporary signature of "Jos. Allen" on titles. Enclosed in an open-end cloth case.. The first American edition of Montesquieu's (1689-1755) classic work of political theory that helped form the American Constitution. Montesquieu first published The Spirit of Laws in 1748 in his native France (as De l'esprit des loix) anonymously, in part because his works were subject to censorship. The book became recognized for its pioneering work on political theory and comparative law, and was rapidly translated into other languages and published throughout Europe. Thomas Nugent, the influential Irish historian and travel writer, published the first English translation in 1750, but in 1751 the Roman Catholic Church placed the work on its Index…

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…
