Scarce first edition of this collection of three essays by this noted American biologist and zoologist who, among other accomplishments, initiated and shaped the Marine Biological Association of San Diego (now Scripps Institution of Oceanography). Throughout his life he was an advocate for evolution, science education, and human service, believing that science was the key to a future society. In his foreword to this book, he states that as he "is approaching the completion of the 'Unity of the Organism' that he needed the essays in print, partly as record and partly as super-record" of the development of his thoughts in this area. Index. 164 pp.
