About This Item

New York: H.C. Sleight, Clinton Hall [and:] Boston: Pierce and Parker, 1831. First Edition. 85, [3]pp. 16mo. Publisher's original glazed and polished cloth with printed label to upper cover. Mild wear to binding, some internal foxing; very good.

Persuasive work on the value of the Bible and its teachings, eventually republished in London, and favorably reviewed for its practical wisdom and brevity. In two parts, the second part emphasizes the importance of an elevated religious character for young men to attain.

Author Baxter Dickinson (1795-1875) was a native of Amherst Massachusetts, a Yale graduate, and a pastor and academic in Massachusetts, Ohio, New York, New Jersey and Illinois. In Lake Forest, near Chicago, Dickinson established a Young Ladies' Seminary. He was further known for his temperance work.

A scarce title; OCLC returns one copy with this dual New York and Boston imprint. Ten records cite an issue with the New York imprint only, priority unknown.

Imprints 6859. One copy at AAS.
