About This Item

This early 20th century decorative illustrated leather book comprises the eight stories from the Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grim, illustrations by Arthur Rackham in 1909.

Title: Le Printemps Sur La Neige Et D'Autres Contes Du Bon Vieux Temps.
Author: Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, Ch. (Charles) Guyot (Translator)
Publisher: L'Edition D'Art, H. Piazza, Paris.
Edition: First Edition in French, Published 1922, Limited to 1300 copies, this being copy no. 683.
Binding/description: 3/4 brown leather hardcover, gilt decorated spine with 5 raised bands, green marble paper covered boards with matching endpapers, upper gilt leaf edge, frontispiece portrait of author opposite title page, (16) tipped in color plates and (9) black/white drawings.

Author Note: The Grimms believed that the most natural and pure forms of culture were linguistic and based in history. The work of the Brothers Grimm influenced other collectors, both inspiring them to collect tales and leading them to similarly believe, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, that the fairy tales of a country were particularly representative of it, to the neglect of cross-cultural influence.
Illustrator Note: Arthur Rackham (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognised as one of the leading literary figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolour.
Dimensions: 1ʺW × 9.5ʺD × 12ʺH.
Condition Notes: Good; cracked front hinge (binding cords and endpaper gutter intact), rear hinge starting on both ends, leather chipped in areas, wear at extremities, strong square spine, clean light age-toned text pages and plates light. A nice copy.
