About This Item
London: W. Innys and J. Richardson, 1754. First Edition. Hardcover (rebound in leather). Good Condition. Attractively rebound in brown calf, blindtooled and gilt, with new endpapers on early marbled paper. Foxed, stained, age toned and chipped throughout. Many of the plates repaired at the folds with Japanese paper, a few with early repairs with newspaper on the verso and earlier repairs reattaching the plates by sewing. Plate edges chipped in the margins with some loss onto the plate area in a few cases, offsetting onto text pages. Despite all this, the 32 plates are complete and largely intact, and the text is complete and legible. xi, (5), 312pp
Though it went through editions until 1825 and an abridgement in 1769. The detailed plates show windmills, water wheels, fountains, and, most famously, a sail powered cart with gears that directly supply power to the front wheels. ESTC N11794.
Bibliotheca Mechanica 101/102; the first edition is rarely seen. Just 15 copies of the first edition in OCLC, 4 of them in the US. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Science & Technology; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 042698.
