About This Item

Winchester and New Castle, Delaware: St Paul's Bibliographies, Oak Knoll Press, The Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia, 2023. stiff paper wrappers. Bibliography. thick 8vo. stiff paper wrappers. xvi, 505 pages. With an introduction by G. Thomas Tanselle. First published by Princeton University Press in 1949, this reprint with the introduction by G. Thomas Tanselle was published in 1994 by St. Paul's Bibliographies. Reprinted by Oak Knoll Press and The Bibliographichal Society of the University of Virginia in 2023, this indisputable classic of 20th-century scholarship is one of the standard guides on the subject of bibliography, providing a comprehensive manual for the description of printed books as physical objects. Although there has been much activity in the area of descriptive bibliography since, Bowers' work still holds its place as the central book to which those engaged in bibliographical work continually return.

Synopsis

From the text: "The craze for first impressions of first editions, and first issues of first impressions of first editions, and first states of first impressions of first editions, has occasionally resulted in speculation and bibliographical absurdity among collectors and dealers.... Any minor change made in the course of the original printing is immediately seized on as constituting an 'issue.' A trial binding used for perhaps twenty copies of salesmen's samples becomes a rare 'first issue.'"

About Oak Knoll Books/Oak Knoll Press

Oak Knoll Books was founded in 1976 by Bob Fleck, a chemical engineer by training, who let his hobby get the best of him. Somehow making oil refineries more efficient using mathematics and computers paled in comparison to the joy of handling books. Oak Knoll Press, the second part of the business, was established in 1978 as a logical extension of Oak Knoll Books. Oak Knoll Books is a thriving company that maintains an inventory of about 20,000 titles. Our main specialties are books about bibliography, book collecting, book design, book illustration, book selling, bookbinding, bookplates, children's books, Delaware books, fine press books, forgery, graphic arts, libraries, literary criticism, marbling, papermaking, printing history, publishing, typography & type specimens, and writing & calligraphy - plus books about the history of all of these fields.
