Cambridge: Cambridge University Press [from 1910], 1950. Second Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine+. Third Impression (one of 1,500 sets), complete in three volumes, of this landmark work in formal logic, showing that mathematics could be derived solely from logical concepts and by logical methods. Thick, tall 8vo (242 x 163mm): xlvi,674; xxxi,[1],742; viii,491,[1]pp. Publisher's black finely woven cloth, spines stamped in gilt; drab green dust jackets printed in black. A Fine set, tightly bound, mild toning to heavy coated stock (as often) but generally clean and bright throughout; Near Fine or better jackets with brief edge wear and darkening to spine panels. Blackwell & Ruja A9.2c. Originally published in three volumes, in 1910, 1912, and 1913, with a second edition appearing in 1925 (Volume I) and 1927 (Volumes II and III). For that edition, Whitehead provided this seemingly dismissive commentary: "The great labour of supervising the second edition of Principia Mathematica has been solely undertaken by Mr. Bertrand Russell. All the new matter in that edition is due to him, unless it shall be otherwise expressly stated." The "new matter" comprises an important new introduction, three appendices: A (theory of deductions for propositions containing apparent variables), B (mathematical induction), and C (truth-functions and others), and a list of definitions. "Along with Aristotle's Organon and Gottlob Frege's Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, [the Principia Mathematica] remains one of the most influential books on logic ever written." (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. London: John Murray, 1991. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Printing, with drawings and illustrated dust jacket by John Craxton. 8vo: [10],118pp, with four black and white illustrations and a map of Peru. Publisher's blue cloth, spine stamped in gold, jacket priced £10.95. Signed by the author to front fly-leaf. Fine, tight and unread; about Fine jacket (faint smudge to back panel). In 1971, Leigh Fermor accompanied five friends on a sojourn into the high Andes of Peru, from Cuzco to Urubamba, on to Puno and Juli on Lake Titicaca, down to Arequipa, and finally back to Lima. The expedition, led by a writer and poet, included a Swiss international skier and jeweler, a social anthropologist from Provence, and a Nottinghamshire farming squire—all seasoned mountaineers. The other two participants—Leigh Fermor and a botany-loving duke—were novices. As the group traveled into increasingly remote regions, Leigh Fermor recorded his experiences in this series of letters to his wife, Joan. N.…
