About This Item

London: Methuen and Co, 1920. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. A scarce example of this influential work of science fantasy, and the first novel in the Barsoom series. A scarce edition of this science fantasy novel. This novel was the first of Burroughs Barsoom series following its serialization in the pulp magazine 'All Story Magazine'. A planetary romance, which is a subgenre of science fantasy which became highly popular during the mid 20th century. In addition to being set on Mars there are elements of the Western. With the scarce dustwrapper in a very bright condition. This is the ninth edition of the work issued in cheap form. It was printed in late 1920, the same year as the first cheap edition in 1920. The true first edition in book form was published on April 3rd 1919. A classic example of 20th century pulp fiction which inspired science fiction writers such as Ray Bradbury and Arthur C Clarke. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, very smart with light shelfwear to the head and tail of spine. Rubbing to the spine. Dustwrapper is smart. Closed tear to the head and tail of rear joint. Small tidemark to the spine, resulting in a bleedthrough from the cloth. A few marks to the wraps and some edgewear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned due to the paper used. Otherwise just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed

A Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous Barsoom series. It is also Burroughs' first novel, predating his Tarzan stories. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the story is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. It is a seminal example of the planetary romance genre, which became highly popular in the decades to follow, and also has some elements of Westerns.

Reviews

On Nov 3 2016, a reader said:
If your looking for a book that is so well written, with a story that excites and grips you to keep reading more. Than this is your book! Normally I am not interested space sci-fi adventures; but this is not that. Its more like the movie stargate, but way better. It's hard to believe this was written in 1912! After reading this book I have come to the conclusion that Edgar Rice Burroughs has to be one of the best writers ever created. The same author who brought us Tarzan. Which i have never read. In fact, even though Tarzan has been a popular part of our entertainment and movie culture. It never moved me enough to want to read the book. Llittle did I know it was created by the same author who fabricated the masterpice that is "A Princess of Mars". Now knowing how wonderfully written it is, and how much I love Burrough's writing style? It has moved me to want to try reading Tarzan and more. Whether or not you like fiction, this is one book that should not be missed. I was first interested in reading this after watching the movie "John Carter" which is based on this and the series of books That followed after. I'm so glad I did.
