About This Item
Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1882. Hardcover. First American edition, first issue with the Franklin imprint on the copyright page and uncorrected text on pp. 124, 263, 362 ('estate' not 'state,'do not' instead of 'do,' 'reigned' not 'reined' respectively); 7 x 9; pp. [10], 11-411, [3]; half morocco and marbled boards; marbled endpapers and page edges; five raised bands and gilt title and rosettes on spine; illustrated with 192 engravings; some wear and rubbing to edges of boards and corners; occasional spots - mostly to margins and not affecting text and illustrations; thin closed cut to lower margin of first free page at hinge; overall in very good- condition.Though title page lists the publication year as 1882, Twain's historical tale was actually published in December 1881 after the London and the Montreal editions. It was made available in several bindings of various prices, including green cloth, full sheep, half calf, and half morocco. All the leather-bound copies have become much scarcer than the cloth-bound ones.
