About This Item

Boston: James R. Osgood & Co, 1882. First US edition. Very Good +. Preceded by the UK and Canadian editions. BAL Binding state "A" with the two blanks at the end used as the end paper and paste-down. With the correct Franklin Press imprint on the copyright and the three misprints uncorrected: "estate" (p. 124), "do not" (p. 263), and "reigned" (p. 362). A Very Good+ copy with some fraying and wear at the spine ends and with a charming Christmas gift inscription dated 1881 on the front end paper.

Set in the Tudor palace of Henry VIII, Twain's first attempt at historical fiction used the doppelganger motif to explore what might happen if Prince Edward and a pauper named Tom Canty were switched into each other's lives. Like many of Twain's works, the novel contains incisive political and social critiques about class hierarchy and human kindness.

BAL 3402. Very Good +.

The Prince and the Pauper is an English language novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada before its 1882 publication in the United States. The book represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, the novel tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court, London, and Edward VI of England, son of Henry VIII of England.
