About This Item
New York: D. Appleton-Century Company, 1934. Norton's first published book, adventure fiction of an orphaned American teen who finds himself king of a small European country, rather against his will; time period unclear, but perhaps just before the Great War? Stated first printing (first edition), with (1) on last page. Hardcover, lacking the jacket; light wear, but spine a bit faded and water-spattered, minor stains to front board, bookplate covering ink name inside front cover (both noting George Hunt as owner), same name inside back, both offsetting to opposite pages; with an interesting pedigree revealed in a lengthy gift note on free endsheet: "Awarded to Billy Hunt Honorary Member of the Junior Literary Guild in recognition of his contribution to Young Wings. Helen Ferris Editor September 1934". Ferris [Tibbets](1890-1969) was editor-in-chief of the Junior Literary Guild from 1929-1959 as well as the editor of numerous children's books; earlier, the Girl Scouts' American Girl Magazine and while at JLG their journal Young Wings, presumably of young writers' work; she also worked with Eleanor Roosevelt on two books & while ER was on the board of the JLG. We do not know what her connection with Norton was, if any, but she was an important figure in the field in her day.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Kate Seredy. Octavo.
