1800 TRUE 1st ed Pigafetta on MAGELLAN Italian Voyages Exploration Amoretti Map

First edition of the first complete account of Magellan!

Antonio Pigfetta was a 16th-century Italian explorer who famously accompanied Ferdinand Magellan on his expedition to the Spice Islands. During this voyage, Pigfetta kept a detailed journal of the events as well as first-hand accounts of the Cebuano language. This journal is the primary source for much of what is known today about Magellan and the first circumnavigation of the world. Curiously though, this journal was written in a combination of broken Venetian, Spanish, and Italian was first translated into Italian in Milan in 1800 by Carlo Amoretti.

This 1800 first edition is extremely valuable and desirable – a rare account of perhaps the most important expedition of the 16th-century. Prior to this edition, editors collected translations from various places and pieced together insufficient and "unsatisfactory" editions, according to Ebert. This work includes charming sketches of discoveries and events of the voyage including a small map at the beginning of the first chapter.

Walter de Henley was a 13th-century French agriculturalist primarily remembered for his treatise on husbandry. In fact, this book is considered to be

John Norden was a 16th-century English cartographer and surveyor who, in 1600, was appointed to survey land in Devon for the Duchy of Cornwall. While mapmaking brought him fame, it was his work as surveyor of numerous royal castles that has brought him lasting recognition. His treatise on surveying is one of the earliest of its kind, and the very first English treatise on surveying of the 17th-century.

Honeyman's account of this work is perhaps the most telling.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
