Burlingame: Harold Sampson, 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Inscribed by Sampson on the front flyleaf. One of the first native-born Californians to become a professional, Sampson started in golf as a 10-year-old caddie, became a shop helper, club marker, and then assistant at Claremont CC and Del Monte GC, and later served as the first head professional at Pebble Beach (1919). He was also an excellent player who won both the Pacific Northwest Golf Association and Northern California PGA championships, and competed against the likes of Gene Sarazen, Jock Hutchinson, and Walter Hagen, who called him "a star of the first water." Today, Sampson is best remembered for his book Golf Instruction Simplified (1950) and his popular "Golf Clinic" column for Golf Digest. 65 p. with photographs and diagrams. Small octavo. Original red cloth binding, with gilt titles. Near fine.
