About This Item

Great Britain: Aquarian Press, 1988. Hardback. First Edition. Priest and Freemason. The Life of George Oliver. Slight shelf wear to top edge of D/J. George Oliver was widely known as a writer on masonic history and symbolism in the first half of the nineteenth century. His serious attempts to tackle the compatibility of Freemasonry with Christianity brought him worldwide admiration and he soon became known as 'the sage and historian of masonry'. This book describes Olver's life as a schoolmaster, country priest, Freemason and author, and chronicles his life in Lincolnshire and Wolverhampton. Despite his wish for a quiet life, he was drawn into controversy with bith the Grand Master (the Duke of Sussex) and Church authorities in Wolverhampton, and was dismissed as Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Lincolnshire. This fascinating biography - the first about Oliver - draws the reader into Oliver's controversial thoughts on masonry and religion, and his detailed accounts of village life in the early nineteenth century will delight and interest all who read them. Illustrated. 192 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Hardback.
