About This Item

Hachette Books, 7-06. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. First edition. vii + 291 pages, with index. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Interesting account how the famous movie biography of tragic baseball legend Lou Gehrig came about. MGM mogul Samuel Goldwyn, not a baseball fan nor well versed in its history, had to be convinced that such a film would be profitable. Once the project was green-lighted, Gehrig's widow Eleanor, played by Theresa Wright in the film, became deeply involved in story development as well as the primary source for factual issues. The author examines how the starring roles were filled, Gehrig's by Gary Cooper, and details the actors' development of the characters and preparation for the film.
