Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - 1894

London : George Allen , 1894 A very good copy of the 1st publication of the 'Peacock Edition' of Pride and Prejudice with illustrations by Hugh Thomson. In the original green decorative cloth binding with spectacular gilt peacock design to front board and gilt designs to spine. Top page edges gilt, remainder untrimmed. With numerous black and white illustrations by Thomson. The binding has been rebacked retaining the original spine and the book is therefore sound and tight. The original black endpapers have been retained with professional repair at the joints. The gilt decoration is slightly dulled to the front board and more so to the spine, which is cocked to the front. Board corners lightly turned. Contents are generally very bright and clean with the odd mark and spot. There is light toning to the paper; marking in the top margin of pp 218/9 which is faintly mirrored on the pages immediately preceding and following; and a browned area where a piece of newspaper was used as a bookmark on pp 454/5.
