About This Item

London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd, 1941. First printing. Hardcover. Octavo. viii, 351 pages. Near fine in a near fine, price-clipped dust jacket. Some sections of mild browning to endpapers, slight fading to cloth along spine and top edges of boards, small bookseller tag at lower inner margin of front free endpaper. Jacket has a minor bit of staining to lower edge of rear panel, a rubbed hole along a 1/2" section of lower fore edge fold, and a few other minor rubs. Clean, sound, and bright overall.. Dust jacket art by Eric Fraser. A collection of short stories by John Collier, a master of the weird tale. Here are two dozen "astonishing and memorable accounts of the ways in which the normal individual may run afoul of the bizarre, the occult, and the openly fiendish." This British first edition sports the uncommon and striking dust jacket by Eric Fraser.

John Collier was an English writer who spent much time in Hollywood writing for film and television. His stories are broadly fantasies but are really of their own kind. Some of them were written for or adapted as episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone.

Collier's stories are so well crafted that he is considered by many to be "a writer's writer," particularly admired by the likes of Ray Bradbury, Roald Dahl, Neil Gaiman, Anthony Burgess, and Michael Chabon.

Ref. CURREY p. 121.
